“You need to invite her to come see you play,” Dana said as she and Brenda were walking to the car on Thursday night after their rehearsal. “Are you ever going to introduce me to her, or is she some hideous creature you’re embarrassed to be seen with? Ooh, maybe you’re afraid she’ll fall for me and leave you in the dust.”
“God, you’re a pain in the ass,” Brenda said with a laugh. She looked over her shoulder and saw Tommy Rayne watching them from the doorway of his shop. She’d noticed him paying way too much attention to her over the past few weeks, but she wasn’t about to worry Kay by mentioning it to her. She got into the Durango and pulled her phone out of her pocket as Dana closed the passenger door. “I’ll call and invite her to come tomorrow night. Will that make you happy?”
“Immensely.” Dana clapped her hands like a little kid who’d finally gotten her way, and Brenda couldn’t help but laugh at her.
“Hello,” Kay said in Brenda’s ear. As usual, Brenda’s pulse spiked just at the sound of her voice.
“Hey, beautiful,” Brenda said, ignoring Dana’s heckling. “I just got done with rehearsal and wanted to hear your voice.”
“Jesus, Brenda, you drive me crazy. Why don’t you come over?”
“As tempting as it sounds, I can’t tonight because I have an early morning meeting with one of our suppliers.” Brenda tried to banish the thoughts of what might happen were she to take Kay up on her offer. It was definitely getting harder to stay celibate. She knew she would give it up very soon, but she didn’t want it to be on a night when she had to be up early the next day. She intended to take her time exploring Kay’s body. “I was calling to invite you to Discovery tomorrow night to watch us play.”
“Then you didn’t call just to hear my voice?” Kay’s tone was teasing, and Brenda chuckled.
“Can’t I have more than one reason to call?”
“Of course you can, baby. And I’d love to see you play. What time should I be there?”
“We start at nine, so just don’t be late.”
“I wouldn’t dream of it. I’ll see you tomorrow then.”
“Sweet dreams, beautiful,” Brenda said. She smiled when she heard a quick intake of breath from the other end of the line.
“You have no idea what you do to me.”
“Maybe you can show me tomorrow night.” Brenda knew how her words would be taken, and she admitted it was time. Time to show Kay exactly how much she’d come to care about her. Before Kay had a chance to respond, Brenda ended the call and shoved the phone back into her pocket.
“Did I just hear you tell her you’re going to have sex with her tomorrow night?” Dana asked.
“Maybe.” Brenda started the SUV without even a glance at her.
“It’s about fucking time. I was beginning to think you weren’t ever going to sleep with her.”
“I’m pretty sure she was starting to think the same thing.
